Program Insights

The Marumali Program® for Young People provides a culturally grounded and trauma informed healing program for First Nations young people in youth justice centres and diversionary programs, supporting healing, identity, resilience and cultural connection.

Grounded in the Marumali Journey of Healing Model, the program creates culturally safe spaces for young people to explore the impacts of trauma, removal, disconnection and intergenerational experiences, while strengthening their connection to culture, family, community and Country.

The program recognises the strengths, experiences and potential of every young person. Participants are supported to better understand their own story, strengthen their sense of identity and belonging, recognise their strengths and make positive choices about where they want to go next.

Understanding your story and experiences - Explore how history, family experiences, removal, trauma and disconnection can influence identity, relationships, choices and wellbeing.

Strengthening identity and cultural connection - Explore identity, belonging and the role that culture, family, community and Country can play in healing, strength and wellbeing.

Understanding your healing journey - Use the Marumali Journey of Healing Model to understand that healing is an individual journey and recognise the strengths, experiences and connections that can support it.

Skills and knowledge you will gain

Recognising your strengths - Identify personal and cultural strengths, resilience and the qualities young people already have that can help them move forward.

Building connection and belonging - Explore ways to strengthen connection with culture, family, community and Country and understand how these relationships can support wellbeing and belonging.

Building confidence and making positive choices - Develop greater self awareness and confidence, recognise the impact of choices and explore strategies for making decisions that support personal goals and wellbeing.

Setting goals and planning a future - Explore aspirations for the future and identify achievable goals around education, training, employment, relationships, culture, community and personal wellbeing.

Building positive pathways - Identify the people, cultural connections, community supports and services that can help young people continue their healing journey and work towards the future they want.

Strengthening healing, identity and future pathways

The Marumali Program® provides young people with a culturally safe space to understand where they have come from, recognise the strengths they already carry and think about where they want to go next.

Through healing, cultural connection and greater understanding of identity and belonging, young people are supported to build confidence, strengthen resilience, make positive choices and develop goals for their future.

The program supports young people to see a future beyond their involvement with the justice system and identify practical pathways towards reconnection with family and community, education, training, employment and long term wellbeing.
